HOLMES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT

AUXILIARY PROGRAM
MISSION: THE MISSION OF THE AUXILIARY PROGRAM IS TO ASSIST THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IN MAINTAING PUBLIC SAFETY, CRIME PREVENTION, AND PROMOTE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT.
"IT IS A COMMEDABLE ACTION TO SERVE YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS AND PROVIDE A WORTHWHILE SERVICE AS A VOLUNTEER; THE REWARDS ARE GREAT, YET THE FOLLOWERS ARE FEW"

The Auxiliary Unit is compiled of a group of volunteer individuals who serve on an as needed basis in all facets of departmental operations. The unit can maintain a maximum of 10 members at any given time. All Auxiliary Deputies are provided extensive intra-departmental certification training to aid them in the completion of their duty assignments. Typically all Auxiliary Deputies maintain full-time employment in other areas, so it often raises the question as to why someone would volunteer their time to serve in such a dangerous profession. Some say it is a "state of mind", while others say it is simply "an addiction", but all agree it is rewarding to simply provide a worthwhile cost free service back to the community and the great citizens of Holmes County. The Auxiliary unit operates under a command hierarchy with ultimate oversight provided by the Sheriff. Prior to becoming an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff, all interested individuals must pass through a rigorous screening process.

Each Auxiliary deputy is outfitted and equipped with standard duty gear just as a full-time deputy sheriff. The Auxiliary unit is self-maintained and receives no budgetary funding from the Board of County Commissioners or the Sheriff's Department itself. All funding brought into the unit is provided either by public or civic donations.

Some of the duties performed by an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff include:

- Security for various county school functions
- Traffic control for special events
- Community patrol
- Providing back-up to all primary county units

The Holmes County Sheriff's Department Auxiliary Unit is an asset not only to the department but to the county as a whole. In a day and time when volunteerism is extremely uncommon, each of these individuals selflessly serve with little appreciation.
